Peanut Free Baseball for the Chicago Cubs

Here is some more peanut-free baseball news. Recently I discovered this Facebook fan page supporting peanut-free baseball at Wrigley Field.

Paste the link in your browser to join baseball fans who want the Cubs to join the other major league baseball teams that offer peanut-free zones and/or games.

If you'd like to reach the Cubs directly, click here. I know that with their new ownership that the Cubs are considering establishing peanut-free zones, so let them know they have fan support for this measure.

Thanks to Joyce, a fellow Chicagoan, for starting this effort!

I love you blog...I always appreciate your encouraging words. I am fairly new to peanut allergy. My daughter is two, and reading about your daughter gives me hope that my daughter and my family will be able to "make it" in this peanut-filled world.

I know that I still have a lot to learn about PA. In fact, I am taking my daughter to a baseball game later this month, and I didn't even think about peanuts! Yikes! Since there will be no peanut-free zone at this game, do you have any suggestions on how to minimize risks?

Another questions I have is...do you know any books that I can read to my daughter about peanut allergy? The books I have found so far are geared towards older kids (probably more like four-ish)...I'm looking for something that's very simple. I want to start teaching my daughter not to eat peanuts.

Thanks!

Hi Ringo-chan,

Thank you for your kind words about my blog. Regarding baseball games, wipe down the seats, try to clear your immediate area of peanut residue and watch your child to make sure she is not reacting. Another helpful thing is to bring something to cover the seat with, to minimize contact with peanuts and their residue.

Unfortunately, regular baseball games usually have lots of peanuts everywhere, but the open air or large stadium should help. If you see your daughter breaking out or having trouble, remove her from the area immediately.

Readers, help me out here. How have you coped with baseball games that had no peanut-free zones?

A great, simple picture book for your daughter is "Ally the Allergic Elephant." It was my daughter's favorite when she was young.

You can buy it on Amazon.com. It's written by Nicole Smith.

Good luck and let me know how you make out at the game!

Best, Jenny

Hi Jenny,

Thanks for all of your great suggestions. After a little googling, another great suggestion I found is to ask neighbors to not throw down the peanut shells, but ask them to put the shells in a bag to keep them more contained. I am definitely going to bring along some sandwich bags with me, and hope that we have understanding people sitting near us.

I'm also going to sit my daughter in the middle between my husband, myself and our friends to create a buffer from other people.

The book you suggested looks perfect!

Thanks again!!
